Biosolvit was born from a disturbing observation: 97% of the palm tree used in the production of heart of palm was discarded. Guilhermo Queiroz, the founder, discovered this in 2013 and decided to turn that waste into plant pots made of vegetable fibre.
In 2017, Queiroz was looking for nobler applications for the biomass. A meeting at a university centre led him to a researcher who was developing a product to absorb oil spills using the same discarded biomass. That collaboration gave rise to Biosolvit.
The company took part in international presentations, including a pitch in Paris. The oil company Total tested the product at the Cedre Institute in France, where it was recognised as the most efficient oil absorber in the world. The biopolymer Bioblue Ecofast became the flagship product.
From Barra Mansa, the company expanded rapidly, serving the oil, mining and energy industries. It grew 3x a year, reaching revenue of US$ 3 million. The company also developed Biogreen Agro (a biofertiliser) and is testing water treatment solutions with 99.7% efficiency in absorbing hydrocarbons.
The global expansion includes partnerships in the United States and Europe, with a focus on the oil and gas market.
